Manhattan has more studios, but Brooklyn's are often easier to get to for residents and can have better availability. Since SMP takes several appointments, subway convenience is worth weighing seriously. Consult on both sides of the river if you are undecided — the consultations themselves are usually short and tell you a lot.
What healed work should look like
Ask every artist to show results photographed at least three months after the final session. Fresh work looks darker and sharper than the settled result, and a portfolio made entirely of same-day photographs does not tell you what you are buying. Artists who do good work are generally keen to show how it has aged.
